Merging My Sites

December 3, 2008

As many of you probably already know, I maintain two websites: this one and Born Geek. For the past good while now, I’ve focused the vast majority of my efforts on this website, letting what was once the ‘flagship’ site go by the wayside. As such, I’m tossing around the idea of merging this website and Born Geek. I see a few benefits:

  • Only one site to maintain, so updates are easier to make
  • Removes the need to double post on certain topics (extension releases, for example)
  • Consolidates contact pages (I get submissions from the Born Geek contact page nearly daily; the one at this website rarely sees any use at all)

If I decide to merge these two sites, a number of changes would take place to the content on Born Geek:

  • I’m considering removing all of my freeware applications from the site, seeing as the vast majority of them are no longer supported (all the Firefox stuff stays, of course)
  • Code snippets would simply become ‘blog posts’ filed under an appropriate category
  • The merged site would likely retain the “Born Geek” name, while “Year of the Code Monkey” would be tossed

What do you folks think? Should I? Shouldn’t I? I hate to see one thing go by the wayside, especially when my most popular content (the Firefox Toolbar Tutorial and Profile Tutorial) reside there. Let me know what you think; your thoughts would be appreciated.

  1. I think you should, but keep this theme, and maybe keep the blog titled Year of the Code Monkey?

  2. The theme being used at Born Geek would definitely be changed. I’m unhappy with it, and I think the one used here looks much better. Or, I might end up spinning a new theme altogether.

What is essentially the “Home” page at Born Geek would become my blog. I would probably rename the “Home” button as “Blog” to make that clear, though I’m not sure how I could retain the name.
