About Jonah Bishop

That’s me over on the right. I am an avid programmer, gamer, and generally geeky guy living in Hillsborough, NC. I work for IBM in Research Triangle Park, where I write test tools for IBM hardware. In December of 2004, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Computer Science Department at North Carolina State University. I enjoy programming so much that, not only do I do it at work, but I also write code in my spare time. I’m well versed in a number of languages: C++, HTML (and Cascading Style Sheets), MySQL, PHP, Perl, and shell scripts (both bash and batch). If I had to pick a favorite language, I’d go with either Perl or PHP.
Some of my non-computing related interests include photography, music, and the occasional outdoors hike. I not much of a movies kind of person, but I tend to watch a fair amount of television. Shows like The Office, Pushing Daisies, The Simpsons, MythBusters, and Cops are my standard fare. There are also a number of enjoyable programs on PBS.
On a more personal level, I have a sister who lives and works as an English teacher in Kamihayashi, Japan. My dad works at UNC-CH in the computer science department. He’s always got some sort of software project going on, so we often talk about programming and computers. My mom has always been the “stay-at-home” kind, but she’s very active in our church. And she’s an excellent cook!
About This Site
Year of the Code Monkey gives me a more dynamic and personal web presence than its sister site Born Geek. In short, this is my space to do and say what I feel. Feel free to join in the discussions at any time; comments are welcome from all readers.
The odd name for this blog comes from the fact that I was born in the Chinese year of the monkey, and I happen to be a code monkey. For me, every year is the year of the code monkey!
This website is powered by WordPress and uses a custom-built theme. You may notice that the header images on each page change randomly as you browse the site. The images themselves are cropped photographs that I have taken over the years, while the random image rotation is based on a PHP script from A List Apart. Site hosting is happily provided by DreamHost (learn how I can save you money with them).
Photography Album
The software I use to power my photo album, which I have lovingly dubbed “Monkey Album”, is a custom creation. It is written using PHP and MySQL and is, to some extent, modeled after a third-party album package I used to employ. I consider Monkey Album to be a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you eventually see a new feature or two. At this time, it is not available to the public.
