In the early 1800s, this spot was one of the ferry points across the Cape Fear River (on the road from Raleigh to Fayetteville). Several dams and locks were built along this stretch of the river to help in crossing. The remains of the Northington dam and locks is located precisely where the whitewater is in this photograph. Due to recent rains, the water level was too high to see the actual remains. They are visible on the Google Maps satellite view of the area.
